March Home Improvement Checklist & Tips

We are in that weird in between when it comes to seasons in Louisiana. Some call it early spring. Others call it “Third Winter”. We’ve had two snow/ice storms, the second worse than the first. Once you get through the major repairs from the storms, there are things you need to check on your home to keep things in top shape. We have compiled a list of things you should review and some tips to help you out.

1) Termite Damage Repair

With all of the snow and ice melting, the areas around your home are now an enticing dinner for termites. It is easy to not notice the damage until it's too late. Keep up with a termite prevention service and if you do notice that you already have damage, call us for an estimate to repair those damages. Damage to support structures of your home can cause a surprising number of other issues and you definitely want to catch them before it gets worse.

2) Gutter Clean Up & Repair

After the leaves have fallen and some storms have passed, take the time to clean and inspect your gutters. Blocked and overflowing gutters can cause damage to siding and foundation. We replace damaged fascia boards, support beams and siding, as well as, gutter systems, including downspouts and gutter guards.

3) Air Unit Review

Check and clean your AC unit. While spring cleaning, consider having your air ducts cleaned out.

4) Spring Yard Check

Start prepping the yard for spring flowers. We may have another frost but you can begin pruning and cleaning up your yard for new plants.

5) Sprinkler System Test & Repair

Check your sprinkler system for damage, such as, broken sprinkler heads, reduced water output/pressure, etc. Depending on the type of earth on your property, the ground will retain water at various levels. You may have noticed the ground holding water, swelling, etc. It can cause damage to pipes, foundations and more when the ground swells and settles again.

6) Siding Situation

This is the perfect time to check and clean your siding. Mildew and storm damage can shorten the life of your siding. Clean your siding with warm soapy water and a long handled brush, then rinse with clean water. If you notice your siding is outdated, damaged or you're just plain tired of it, give us a call for an estimate on our siding, shakes and board n' batten style siding options.

7) Outdoor Living Preparation

Pretty soon the weather is going to be nice and perfect for outside gatherings and barbecues. Before that happens, inspect and clean your patio and decks. Clean your patio decks and flooring with a pressure washer to remove mildew and grime from the surfaces. You may need to apply a fresh coat of paint or sealant to protect your wooden surfaces from additional damage.

NOTE: If you do not have the backyard of your dreams, whether you need updates or additions, let us know! We offer a wide variety of outdoor living options, from gazebos and decks to patio tops and screen rooms.

8) Windows & Doors

If you haven't already replaced those windows and doors, now is the perfect time. We have a promotion for 10% off our doors this month (ends March 31st, 2021. Click here for more information).

9) Roof Damage

Take a moment to inspect your attic & roofing. After the winter storms, you may have some damage to your shingles, flashing and boots around vent pipes. If you are experiencing a leak, you may notice some discoloration on the ceilings of your interior rooms. We can give you an estimate of repairs or a new metal roof. We have a lot of styles and options to choose from.

10) Routine Safety Checks

  • Smoke detector batteries

  • Carbon monoxide detector

  • Fire extinguishers are in "green zone" and not expired.

  • Exhaust fans are working correctly

If you find any damage or just want to refresh and upgrade your home, please don’t hesitate to call us for any questions you may have or request a complimentary estimate. When it comes to your home improvement needs, at Achievers, We Do It All!
